Morocco Edge Scotland to Seize Control of Group

For long stretches at Gillette Stadium, Scotland looked as though they might frustrate Morocco into a stalemate. They defended in disciplined lines, closed the passing lanes and asked their opponents to find a moment of invention. Morocco eventually did, and it proved sufficient. The 1-0 scoreline flattered neither side but reflected the margin between a team that carried a genuine threat and one that struggled to translate effort into openings.

Morocco controlled possession without ever fully imposing themselves, probing the flanks and testing the patience of a Scottish back line that held its shape for much of the contest. The breakthrough, when it arrived, settled a match that had been drifting toward frustration for the North Africans. From that point Scotland were forced to commit players forward, and the shape they had guarded so carefully began to loosen.

Scotland's difficulties were familiar ones. Scotland, by contrast, face a more anxious final fixture, needing a result and a marked improvement in front of goal. There was much to admire in their organisation, but tournaments are decided by goals, and on this evening they had none to show for their labour.
